In the 2.2 HDI version, the torquey 406 creates
imitators and happy drivers. Glued to the road, the Peugeot readily accommodates
a little extra boost.
Our impressions:
Hot ahead! More flexible than really virulent, the 406 with the 136 bhp
2.2 Hdi engine provides real driving pleasure, whatever the traffic conditions.
Very quiet and without the slightest jerking from the transmission, in Power System’s
hands it now has 164 bhp and 37 mkg of torque. Respectable values, which, before
testing, forebode well for worthy performance. Stopwatch in hand, the results are
even better. To the roundness of the standard version, Power System adds a touch
of aggressiveness, easily handled by the excellent chassis. Willing right from the
lowest revs, the mechanical system plays on the enormous elasticity and retains the
original vehicle’s linear character.
The acceleration is such that the 406 can shamelessly face up to top of the range
petrol models, with a superb 29.8 seconds for the 1000m standing start. Just the
same on overtaking: the standard version is deposed, a handicap that it cannot make
up for in top speed since the Power System flies along at 215 km/h both on the flat
and on the coast. This is its greatest characteristic: the willing box allows you to
keep your speed steady whatever the terrain, without adverse effects on consumption or
noise levels. A great success.
